What is an Employee Persona
?

Marketing teams have been producing customer personas since the 90s, and for good reason. They help them understand the desires and frustrations of their customers and really target their marketing efforts to create more sales.

We should be applying this same level of understanding to our employees, which is where employee personas come in.

How to create an Employee Persona.

Use both quantitative and qualitative data to paint a true picture. Look at your HRIS data, employee surveys and engagement polls to understand demographics, job roles, tenure, and performance metrics. But you also need to speak to your employees. Conduct interviews, focus groups and pulse surveys to delve into motivations, frustrations, work styles and communication preferences.

Use both quantitative and qualitative data to paint a true picture. Look at your HRIS data, employee surveys and engagement polls to understand demographics, job roles, tenure, and performance metrics. But you also need to speak to your employees. Conduct interviews, focus groups and pulse surveys to delve into motivations, frustrations, work styles and communication preferences.

2. Identify key groups.

Now you’ve gathered the crucial data needed to paint a full picture, it’s time to analyse your data to identify segments with common characteristics like role, experience, department or work style. Be sure to avoid creating too many personas, aim for 3-5 representative groups (depending on the size of your organisation).

 

Goals

3. Developed detailed data.

Flesh out each persona with a name, story, and photo to humanise them. Include demographics, goals and motivations, challenges, communication styles, and preferred technologies. Use quotes and anecdotes from actual employees to add some authenticity.

Presenting

4. Bring them to life.

Share personas with your team through workshops or presentations and use personas to guide communication, training and decision-making. Make sure you regularly re-visit and update your personas too because your workforce will continually evolve.

 

Don’t forget to seek stakeholder input too, involve HR, managers, and team members in the process. Consider using data visualisation tools as well, which can help present persona information effectively, and ensure they reflect your values and priorities.
